Exemplary OL Student Award

FACULTY: Nominate one of your students for this award.

All faculty who taught online courses in the 2007-2008 academic school year are being asked to nominate their top students for the Exemplary Online Learning Student Award. Only students who participated in at least three (3) fully online courses during the 2007-2008 academic year and currently maintain at least a 3.0 GPA are eligible to receive this award. All eligible students, who were nominated by faculty, will be asked to write a 200-word essay describing why they feel they are deserving of this award and what it takes to succeed in an online course. A selection committee will review each essay as well as review the student's participation in the course(s) for which they were nominated. The recipient of this award will be given a $2,500 cash stipend.

All nominations are to be submitted electronically by May 31, 2008. The award will be announced at the Online Learning Awards ceremony September 24, 2008 where the recipient will be recognized by the Provost.

Exemplary OL Faculty Award

STUDENTS: Nominate an RIT faculty member for this award.

Students are encouraged to nominate professors they feel have done an outstanding job of teaching an online learning course. This award only applies to fully online courses where there is no face-to-face class time with the instructor. All nominations are to be submitted electronically by May 31, 2008.

The Online Learning Instructional Design group will screen the applications and recommend finalists to a selection committee. A cash award of $1000 will be presented to an RIT faculty member nominated by students and selected after a competitive course review and critique process. The selection committee will consist of members of the Online Learning staff, in addition to others from RIT's faculty, administration, and staff. The awards will be announced at the September 24, 2008 Online Learning Awards ceremony where winners will be recognized by the Provost.

The final faculty nominees will be asked to respond to the following questions:

  • What is unique about your online learning course that distinguishes it from other courses?
  • What advice would you give to a new online learning faculty to help them make their online courses successful?
  • Give an example of how you effectively engage students with learning in your online course.

Innovation in Teaching and Learning with Technology

FACULTY: Nominate yourself for this award.

This award is for outstanding and innovative use of any technology that demonstrates enhanced learning and teaching. It has a very broad focus in order to identify and recognize outstanding innovations by RIT faculty in teaching and learning with technology. Excellent teaching does not require technology, but when an instructor finds a useful strategy using technology then Online Learning would like to help recognize and disseminate the innovation to the larger RIT faculty community. The technologies you may have employed could include myCourses, Wikis, Blogs, Google Docs, YouTube, Podcasts, Tablet PCs, Student Response Systems, - anything really because we don't know what innovations you may have come up with - hence the award.

If you have done something interesting with technology this academic year then please take just a few minutes to let us know more about your innovation. Perhaps it was a customization that makes you a better teacher, or a transformative feature that improved your productivity. A selection committee of Online Learning staff in addition to others from RIT's faculty or administration will review all the ideas that are submitted and 3 of these ideas will be recognized at the Annual Online Learning Awards Ceremony to be held September 24, 2008. One person will be awarded a $1,000 stipend for recognition of outstanding innovation.
