While there is no universally definitive definition of "blended learning", there is general consensus at RIT
and similar universities that a "blended course" is a course in which:
- Online learning activities are introduced to complement face-to-face work.
- Approximately 25% to 50% of classroom time is replaced by instructor-guided online learning activities,
primarily asynchronous interaction in large and/or small groups using myCourses online discussion boards,
but also synchronous web conferences, online quizzes and games, discovery labs, and simulations.
- The online and face-to-face components of the course are combined in a planned, pedagogically valuable manner to take advantage of the best features of each.
