Emerging Technology Partnerships

The Emerging Technology Partnership (ETP) is designed to explore and invest in faculty ideas related to new and emerging technology. Ideas for projects are weighed against current trends and research on new and emerging technologies for teaching and learning. Emerging Technology Partnerships are designed to be “partnerships” between faculty members and Online Learning where the primary aim is the sharing of knowledge about selected technologies.

Upcoming Emerging Technology Projects:

We will be running an ETP during the latter half of the 2008-09 academic year. Information on applying will be sent to RIT faculty via email.

Past Emerging Technology Partnerships

Knowdio Project

Knowledge Studio is an Emerging Technology Project developed with Dr. Scott Hawker from the Software Engineering Department. The goal of Knowledge Studio was to create a taxonomy-based digital library designed to improve student use of the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge. Knowledge Studio is built on the open source DSpace digital library software. Professor Hawker and Online Learning are investigating the learning impacts of Knowledge Studio.

Intelligent Agents for Instruction

Working with Dr. Michael Yacci from Information Technology, this partnership created a Flash based application to aid in the deployment of intelligent agents for instruction. The project goal was to create a framework that Michael Yacci’s Intelligent Computer-based Instruction students could use to explore a variety of agent behaviors. Agents created using this framework could be easily manipulated using XML to mimic intelligent interactions between human and avatar. The code-base is extensible to allow further development, such as advanced text-to-speech rendering, or complex avatar animations.
