What is OWL?

Offered out of the Academic Support Services’ (ASC) Reading and Writing department, the OWL is an instructional unit staffed by several professional writing instructors who provide guidance to online learning students with the overall writing process. It is set up as an online community shell within myCourses that contains a secured Dropbox where students can confidentially submit their essays, term papers, and other writing assignments.

What Are The Benefits?

The OWL offers the same quality writing assistance remotely to online students that is offered in-person at the ASC to on-campus students. Through one or more draft reviews, the OWL instructors coach students on applying improved organization, content, and mechanics to their writing. In this manner, the OWL is not a proofreading service but a resource that empowers students to become better writers.

How Do Students Get Access to the OWL?

Online Learning automatically adds all enrolled online students to the OWL ÒcourseÓ in myCourses each quarter, so faculty do not need to do anything to give students access. However, we do suggest that faculty add the OWL widget to their course home page if they wish for their students to take advantage of the service. For a step-by-step, animated tutorial on how to Add Widgets click here.
